About Lions
Wherever you live, work or travel across the
British Isles, you are likely to come across members of Lions clubs and the projects we support.
Lions are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others and support good causes throughout the British Isles.
Globally we have more volunteers in more places than any other service club organisation, and love to help others and make things happen.
In 2017/18, Lions Clubs International celebrated its centenary.
Every Lions Clubs supports a range of good causes and projects in its area where you can get involved. Every day Lions are having fun by organising remarkable and memorable fundraising activities. Every year in Europe alone, Lions Clubs’ members volunteer around 6 million hours of service and raise £88 million to support the needs of local communities.
Because we are local, we serve the unique needs of the communities in which we live. As we are global, we can address community challenges wherever they occur.

We get involved in our local communities.

When individuals become a Lion, they join a local club.
Many clubs are well-established with long and proud traditions. Others are newer responding to changing needs and modern ways to connect and help others.

What we do
We don’t run, or play with balls of any size, nor shoot with or at things – we are just community service Clubs, dedicated to helping our local communities, and having fun doing it.
Just over a 100 years ago, a Chicago businessman called
Melvin Jones thought that his luncheon club members should put their talents to use serving the local community, and formed the first Lions Club in July 1917.
Since then, his simple community service club has grown to more than 46,000 Lions Clubs world wide with over 1.4 million members – Lions who volunteer to help their community.
How’s that for a 100 year old idea?
Clubs are run by members at their own cost so all funds collected are used for charitable purposes.
Most monies collected by Clubs are given back to local public organisations or charities, with occasional donations to
Lions Clubs International, helping support projects restoring sight, treating diabetes, tackling hunger, helping the environment and disaster relief internationally.
Clubs raise funds via various activities such as charity collections in local Supermarkets at Christmas, public fundays, Fun Runs and other sporting activities, Quizzes, Casino Nights, duck or donkey races, whatever is sociable and good fun. at various times in the year.
We organise free community health screening, litter picks, plant trees, help local foodbanks, hospitals and hospices.
Ordinary People doing amazing things!
