Lions 105CW Safeguarding
Introduction
The MD105 (British Isles) policy sets out the principles for safeguarding within all Lions Clubs across the British Isles.
It is relevant to all within the association and is endorsed by the 105CW District Cabinet
It will be reviewed by the MD Vulnerable Persons Officer as per the policy and any updates and changes cascaded via the District CW Vulnerable Persons Officer
Responsibility
Every Lions Club has a duty of care to consider the safety of children and vulnerable adults. This should be taken into consideration when risk assessing a Lions Club or District event and for the duration of such events.
It is best practice for Lions Clubs to have a set of procedures in place and guidelines for volunteers to follow at events, this may be developed with guidance from the District and Multiple District Officers
All Lions members should be aware of the person responsible for safeguarding within their club, their events and when representing Lions International.
The District will provide training for Lions members on safeguarding and the procedures to follow or Lions Clubs may arrange their own training for its members / volunteers
In line with MD105 (British Isles) guidance, all new members of Lions Clubs International should be Enhanced DBS Checked - if current members are taking part in activities with Children or Vulnerable Adults they must have an Enhanced Charity DBS Check
What to do if you have concerns about a child or vulnerable person
You may have concerns about a child or vulnerable person because of something you have seen or heard or something they may choose to disclose something to you.
If they discloses information to you, you should:
Listen to them without displaying shock or disbelief
Accept what is said and reassure them, do not make promises that you may not be able to keep , e.g. ‘Everything will be alright now’
Do not ask leading questions and do not interrogate them – this is not your responsibility to investigate
Explain to them what you have to do next and who you have to talk to
Take notes, if possible, or write up the conversation as soon as possible afterwards
Contact the Club Safeguarding Lead or Club President as soon as possible and pass on your concerns (Should they need to seek further advice and guidance they will contact the District Vulnerable Persons Officer or District Governor)
Guidance for Events:
All Events should be risk assessed
Exits should be monitored to ensure children cannot leave an event unattended (where possible and practicle)
If this is a regulated activity the volunteer will need an Enhanced DBS check.
